Heart Tattoos

Heart Tattoos have been in style for decades and are a favorite among both men and women, since they are normally smaller in size and can be placed practically anywhere on the body: chests, back, stomachs, lower backs, wrists,
ankles and many other places on the body. There are few tattoos that symbolize love, devotion, betrayal or sacrifice as much as Heart Tattoos. These tattoo designs are usually drawn with many other images including ribbons, daggers, skulls and wings, often revealing deep meaningful messages.

Heart Tattoos are generally tattooed as a symbol of love, friendship and devotion.  The tattoo can vary from a simple symmetrical heart to an elaborate tattoo design incorporating birds and flowers. The shape of the heart is also used in the design of other tattoos like ladybugs with heart shaped bodies, peace signs in the shape of a heart and heart shaped skulls. The heart tattoo is seen in many tattoo studios and on tattoo websites in hundreds of different styles.

Heart Tattoos can be done in may different colors. Red is the most common color but other colors are often used and some colors represent different meanings.

RED: love; romance.

PURPLE: passion; wounded or killed during military duty.

RAINBOW: gay love.

BLACK: dead love

Daggers and Heart Tattoos

The Heart and Dagger Tattoo is often tattooed as symbol of betrayal or loss of love. These tattoos are representing the pain and suffering that the person is experiencing from their loss. Other forms of Heart and Dagger Tattoos represent the sacrifice that one has experienced, as in the case when the dagger or heart depicts military features or if the dagger and heart is enveloped by thorns (representing the crown of thorns that is associated with Christ).

Heart Tattoos and Ribbons

The classic Heart Tattoos that are designed with ribbons have decorated the walls of tattoo studios for over a hundred years. The Heart and Ribbon Tattoo is a timeless design that has been seen on military men around the world for decades and are still as popular today and are usually etched with the name of the loved one left behind, the girl in the last port or the heart they were hoping to win over upon their return home. The Heart and Ribbon Tattoo was also used to carry the names of ones children, parents and even pets. How could a mother disapprove of a tattoo that had "MOM" inscribed in the ribbon. Ribbon and Heart Tattoos vary in design and can include multiple ribbons and hearts (for multiple children, both parents, etc.), flowers (signifying beauty), birds (peace, “love birds”, etc), butterflies (free spirits) and water (purity, serenity, etc) to name a few.

Winged Heart Tattoos

Winged Heart Tattoos are a symbol of a free spirit or free soul. A winged heart with a halo above them is seen by some as a symbol for Faith, Hope and Love, the halo meaning Faith, wing
s meaning Hope and the heart meaning Love. These tattoos can usually be done small enough to make them a brave choice among many of the first timers getting a tattoo. The Sufi Movement (a mystical branch of Islam focusing on the spreading of love, unity and harmony) uses the Winged Heart that is adorned with a crescent moon (representing the heart’s responsiveness) and a five-pointed star (representing divine light).

Sacred Heart Tattoos

The Sacred Heart Tattoo is a very popular and recognizable religious symbol. The features of the Sacred Heart Tattoo are a heart surrounded by thorns, blood and fire, these heart tattoos symbolize Christ’s physical heart and his sacrifice and burning love for all mankind. Other religious heart tattoos may feature crosses, angel wings, rosary beads, halos and even Christ himself.
